Obama's Been to Manila

Contrary to what we've been led to believe... Obama has actually responded to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's phone calls. In fact, he's even visited Malacanang!

And there we were, clucking about how OA and trying hard PGMA was in trying to get Obama's attention. She even managed to feed him kare-kare!

Have you seen the new Colt 45 commercials?

These are not those.

Sabi nga ni Pablo Picasso:
Bad artists copy. Great artists steal.

Or is it more apt to say, "Great minds think alike?"

What do you guys think?

(If anyone can produce links to the Colt 45 TVCs I'm referring to, I can post them here for a proper comparison. Thanks in advance.)

Life in an Ad Agency: Betty Cakes

This is a cute -- for lack of a better word -- way of integrating a product into a piece of web entertainment.

The series is presented by Adobe.

Not bad at all. There's more at : http://www.daveandrick.com

Take That, George Bush! (pause) And That!

George Bush gets the supreme insult by getting shoes thrown at him at an unannounced press conference. Apparently, the shoes are the worst things that could ever be thrown at you according to the Moslems.

What do they have against shoes?

And man, that guy must've really been pissed to throw his shoes away like that. How'd he expect to get home, barefoot and all? : )

Anyway, kudos to him and his big, uh, shoes.

...

Apparently, he wasn't even arrested. But all press cons from now on will require all attendees to remove their footwear.

Sarah Palin is nothing vs. George W. Bush

Seriously though, no matter how many Palin blooper videos we put up, she'll probably never come close to the level of George W. Bush.

Palin absolutely PALES in comparison to Dubya. Here's proof!

Don't worry Sarah. You want to be President? You have much to learn. But it's ok. You still have lots of time.

Palin is a Bird Brain ...

If Sarah Palin was as politically-astute as her camp would lead you to believe, what was she doing being interviewed like this?

Oh, yeah. We just happened to catch her while she was picking a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanks to Martha for the tip.

Yes, They Did! (Obama wins, McCain Concedes)

It's unstoppable now, with 338 electoral college votes in the bag, 68 more than he needed to win, America now has a new president, Barack Hussein Obama.

He goes down in history as America's first African-American president --- and hopefully will be known for far more than that. These are uncertain times and America needs a leader who can help steer it down a more prudent, more responsible, more enlightened path.

Congratulations, Team Obama. Now get to work.

Trick Or Treating A Week Before Halloween - Comedy.com

Trick or treat! : )

Top Gear - Toyota Aygo car football - BBC

Great fun in this video from Top Gear.

Wouldn't it be fun to have a car football championship between Team Echo, Team Jazz, Team Chery, Team Getz, etc?

Maybe an insurance company could sponsor it. (Maybe not AIG though.)

Thanks to Tats for sharing the video, btw.

FRESH: The REAL Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live

This is the only video I could find of Sarah Palin's appearance on Saturday Night Live. It's bound to get taken down by Universal soon so take a look now, while you still can.

Tina Fey really does a pretty good impersonation, I feel. Of course, it's a cartoon version of the real thing. And the real thing... to my surprise, seemed to take the jokes pretty well. Oh, and, to add a final note, and I'm embarrassed to admit this,I agree with Alec Baldwin... Sarah Palin (the real one) looks hot. (But that doesn't mean she deserves to be VP, alright?)

Will add some more videos of the SNL skit IF they are allowed by the gods of Youtube to exist.

What if life had sound effects?

It would sound like this:

It's pretty crude as a video but it's cute. And how can you possibly go wrong with Super Mario Brothers?

Obama roasts McCain

These clips are from the Alfred E. Smith charity dinner, the last stop in the campaign for the two presidentiables to be on the same stage at the same time.

Who would make a better president? Obama, hands down, and most of you would probably agree with me on that.

The burning question however is:
Who would make a better stand-up comic?

Vote for who wins the roasting competition in the comments!

Sarah Palin Family Meeting / Palin Gives Tina Fey a Script

The last time I saw anything this funny was when Dan Quayle was still around!

Then again, have you seen this one? Palin interpreted by Tina Fey ... who was incidentally just parroting what Palin herself said a few days earlier.

My, my, this is bad.

I'm a PC (another new set of commercials from Microsoft)

What's with Microsoft lately?

Here's a NEW set of commercials barely two weeks after the premiere of the Jerry Seinfeld - Bill Gates fiasco. (Which you can read and watch here and here.)

These are better than the previous set, I guess, in that they're more human and therefore more believable.

But wait.

What's the real message here? Oh yeah. "Normal people like you and me use PCs, not Macs."

Uh, dude, we knew that already. Most of the human race uses Microsoft. So what's the big deal about that? (I don't know.)

I also disagree with the strategy of defining or creating a campaign as a response to a competitor's campaign. You're throwing the ball in Apple's court, Microsoft.

Oh and by the way, I think this would've been cute and effective if you had done this when the original Mac vs PC ads aired --- three years ago.

(And somewhere in Richmond, you have some marketing guy muttering: "Oh crap -- back to the drawing board!")

Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates' horrible SECOND Microsoft commercial

Ok. It's not as bad as the first one.

It's actually a bit funny too.

But I still don't see how Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld trying to get a "Simple Life" as a middle-aged Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie can help Microsoft sell more software. Or be perceived to be thought leader in software, the Internet or whatever.

If any, the only thing I'm getting out of this is .... hey, Bill Gates looks like the PC guy in the Mac commercials, doesn't he? He's a goofy, nerdy, even a bit loveable kind of a dork.

Waittaminit, is this supposed to be about refurbishing Bill Gates' image?

But okay, it's funny -- so watch it to get a laugh (it'll try your patience because it's long at 4 minutes 30 seconds) but I don't expect you to change your opinion about Microsoft just yet.

Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates' horrible new Microsoft commercial

Jerry Seinfeld is back in a commercial that, in true Seinfeldian fashion, is actually about nothing.

Come on: The Future... Delicious??? Eh?

This is another one of those Crispin Porter Bogusky creations so it's actually working according to plan: I'm talking about it.

Never mind that I'm talking about how BAD it actually is.

And never mind that I'm talking about the creator of the ad and NOT the product / brand either.

This is not the first time I've said something about them, incidentally. (Look here.)

Something's gone wrong somewhere, boys. Again. Shouldn't you guys be rethinking this whole idea of "publicity is good, no matter what kind of publicity"?

Is this the end of Kimi Raikkonen's career?

This year has been a listless one for Kimi Raikkonen's championship challenge.

In previous years, it was always a case of the car not being good enough. Last year, he was in a Ferrari and managed to win the championship by a whisker -- and by a stroke of luck as well because Hamilton didn't get close enough at the end to get enough points.

This year, Lewis Hamilton has remained strong -- Felipe Massa has gotten stronger -- and the BMWs have managed to get into the top spots occasionally. All of which have conspired to make my favorite Finn's chances slimmer by the week. It doesn't help that he occasionally makes mistakes -- more than in previous years.

Is he losing the drive to win? The nerve? I don't know.

All I know is that when Mika Hakkinen retired, he told McLaren boss Ron Dennis that "If you want to win, get the Finn." Maybe Mika meant some other Finn. Kovalainen, perhaps?

Rumors abound -- and circulated as early as last December -- that Kimi is actually thinking of retiring.

Five races left in the 2008 season and it looks like our ride to the championship has ended.

Here are some videos of the last race at Spa -- they may be the last vids you'll ever see of Kimi going head-to-head with the emerging new F1 hero (and I mean it), Lewis Hamilton. (I'm putting in several just in case some get taken down, as inevitably they will be. You know how the FIA is...)

Eraserheads Reunion Concert - Ely Buendia Rushed to Hospital

Turns out that the long awaited -- sixteen years in the making, did you know -- reunion concert of the Eraserheads was cut short. Ely Buendia, legendary frontman and prolific penman for OPM classics 'Pare Ko', 'Tindahan ni Aling Nena', 'Toyang', 'Alapaap', 'Huling El Bimbo', etc had to be rushed to the hospital -- but not after having performed the first set.

With fifteen songs to go, the concert was considered ended. Cut short again, like the stellar career of the Eraserheads.

We hope though that another reunion is still possible -- and of course, that's dependent on Ely getting better. Say a prayer for the man, will you?

Injustice vs DEALCO via Manila Mayor Lim ?

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim ordered the closure of a slaughterhouse operated by DEALCO, the company of Joyce Alcoreza, a friend of mine from college. While the true facts are beyond me, the video does not lie: the treatment of the officials and workers went beyond civilized and humane.

At the end of the TV clip, you'll hear Joyce's (and the company's) side of the events. Unfortunately, in this country, the Youtube route may be the best and only way for their side to be heard.

I, for one, am convinced. And embarrassed that I voted for Lim when he ran for president.

X-Files: I want to ... watch again

Yes, I saw X-Files: I Want to Believe. It's not bad for an X-Files episode, I think. Everything you loved about the x-Files was there: the darkness, the conflict between faith and skepticism, the gore, the ambiguity. It's the real deal.

Everything that you'd expect from the X-Files. Stuff like what you'd see in this montage of the best X-Files scenes, collected and put together by a true X-Phile and posted on Youtube.

Or shouldn't it be: "Obama is here because the world is ready for change"?

And: "The world is going to change because Obama is here!"

I agree though. And it's great that rappers like Ludacris are onto something very relevant and timely. Think Rock the Vote --- except, in this case, it's Rap the Vote.

Borat is now Bruno!

Sacha Baron Cohen is up to no good again as Bruno, a gay Austrian TV fashion journalist in America.

Expect lots of people to be had on cam... like Ben Affleck, for one. Gisele Bundchen though manages to escape.

If you thought Borat was bad (or really really good -- depending on your perspective), expect this to be even worse (or better!)

Here are some fashion people interviewed by "Bruno" -- watch until the last part and see how they talk about Paris Hilton. Priceless.

Here's what would appear to be Bruno's official Youtube channel.

Note: the movie (reported by most blogs as "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt" is supposedly a mock-title made-up by Defamer according to Wikipedia ) isn't set to hit the big screen until May 2009 --- and yet the Net is full of Bruno videos. How's that for guerrilla marketing?

Funny phone calls: Brit calls police hotline to ask a very urgent question

The Brits are so darned polite, aren't they?

If this happened in the Philippines... er, no, it wouldn't and couldn't have happened in the Philippines, actually, because...

First, very few people would have remembered the number to call.

(... Quiz: Is it
a. 911?
b. 119?
c. 116?
d. 611?
e. None of the above ... answer: none of the above . It's 117.)

Second, there might not be anyone at the other end of the line anyway. Or at least that's how a lot of us tend to think... so we won't even bother calling.

Third, do any of us honestly think the cops can answer the question that the lady was asking?

Fourth, I think we'd probably just spam text all our smarter friends to ask the question. Cheaper and faster pa.

Hamilton Overtakes Massa and Piquet: German GP 2008

Lewis Hamilton was behind Felipe Massa after his pit stop, leaving him third with Massa 2nd and Nelson Piquet (who hadn't pitted yet) in 1st.

Watch him take Massa and Piquet down and romp off to take the win. They couldn't stop him. Clear domination here by McLaren -- and I wonder if Ferrari can still stop Hamilton as the 2nd half of the season begins. This year is tougher than last: Ferrari have not just McLaren to worry about but a resurgent BMW team as well. Not to mention the occasional Honda and Renault surprise which could muddy the chances of our Finnish hero, Kimi. (Not Heikki. He's no hero yet.)

Question: Why is Hamilton so good? This is like watching Schumi. Did he sell his soul to the devil?

Check out this video created by Martina of Adverblog for Nike Football Italy.

Amazing, yes?

Amusingly, Steve Hall of Adrants (from whose blog I found out about it) called this "The Impossible Shot"... forgetting that this is Nike and not Adidas ... which has a franchise on the word "impossible" by now. And, I wouldn't be too surprised if a whole lot of other people also called it that -- heck, that's the catchphrase that came to mind for me too.

The World's Best Presentation: What the F**K is Social Media?

I know this is not a Youtube video.

Came across this entry for Slideshare's "World's Best Presentation contest" on ThreeMinds and thought I can break the blog's rules just this once.

In one zippy and entertaining presentation, Marta Strickland (whoops -- I meant Marta Kagan), Bonafide Marketing Genius, manages to layout what social media is, why and how brands have to get into them. It's 74 slides chock-full of facts and numbers that we all will need to reference at some point. But that's not why I put it in here. It's not just a learning experience for a whole lot of people -- it's also a darn fine visual delight.

Fuel Your Car with Water... Fact or fiction?

I really don't know if this is a scam ... but the video is rising fast on Youtube and I bet a lot of people will be fooled if it is.

As far as I know, the process of extracting hydrogen from water is extremely complex and requires a lot of energy in itself... meaning, a water-powered car while theoretically possible is simply too inefficient to be feasible.

So, has someone finally cracked it? (Yes, I know Daniel Dingle has been touting his water-powered car since 1968 -- but for some reason, I always thought it seemed fishy. In the same way that I think this Japanese one is fishy.)

However, I sure hope I'm wrong though!

Manny Pacquiao Destroys David Diaz in Round 9

Manny Pacquiao totally mauled David Diaz in 9 rounds to become the first Asian and Filipino lightweight champion! (Mind you the Great Flash Elorde tried -- and failed -- twice. So this is a big deal. )

Can you believe that? That's four titles he now holds:

1. WBC Lightweight Champion
2. WBC Junior Lightweight Champion,
3. former world champion at IBF Super Bantamweight, and
4. WBC Flyweight divisions.

Watch this video to see how David Diaz is softened up even more (round 8) and knocked out (round 9). The man fought a valiant fight and no one can say that he chickened out -- though most would probably say too that he was completely, totally, utterly outclassed, outboxed, and out of his league. Pacquiao had a Sunday stroll in the park.

The Controversial JCPenney Speed Dressing Viral

This spot won a Lion at Cannes 2008. But why did client (JC Penney) and agency (Saatchi & Saatchi) disavow it?

Watch it and see for yourself.

Question:

do you think this really was
A. an unauthorized, unsolicited video --

or

B. a video created by them for the specific purpose of entering into the awards shows, creating some PR/Buzz/news articles, in the hope of enticing enough people to take a second look at JCPenney?

I think it's B. Bad idea though.

Reverse Graffiti: Calling on MMDA's Bayani Fernando

Sir:

I know you're very frustrated with how terrible Metro Manila is becoming, especially with the lack of "urbanidad" / urbanity of many of its citizens.

How about involving ordinary people and involving them in something fun and subversive, instead of constantly frowning down upon them from your (non-campaign) billboards?

Watch the video first, Mr Fernando.

Now, here's my idea -- why not partner up with a cleaning product (Mr Muscle, maybe?) and invite all Metro Manila folk to an urban art contest. The canvas: the dirty walls near them. The medium: Mr Muscle and water. The theme: whatever you want it to be.

Everyone can get in on it, really. Plus, it'll be fun to actually "deface" public property (though in reality, they're actually cleaning it up for you). And third, it brings the reality of urban pollution in front of everyone's noses.

That's a better kind of MMDA-sponsored art, don't you think?

Kentucky Fried Cruelty

I don't like PETA. I'm not a vegetarian. Not by a long shot.

I love beef, pork, fish and chicken. Particularly fried chicken. Lots of it. I order it every time. But after watching this video, I think I may reconsider.

Of course, KFC is not the only wide-scale chicken sadist. Correction: Not KFC, but the suppliers of their chicken. I'm pretty sure all the other chicken farms treat chicken the same way. But KFC being the most recognizable as well as one of the biggest consumers in the world has to make a stand and bring standards to more humane levels. If the leader makes a change, all the rest will have to follow.

Procrastination is...

... watching this instead of getting to work right away.

Procrastination is wondering who made this and how he did it and waiting 'til the end to find out.

Procrastination is posting this and sharing it with everyone because it's bloody, brilliantly, beautifully done.

Most of us would claim work or family or school responsibilities prevent us from ever ticking off the items on our own lists --- and maybe that's because we instantly think of the big tasks on our lists. Things like "explore the Byzantine churches in Istanbul" or something like that.

But maybe we can try the easier things first. Like "make 100 people smile today".

That'd be a start.

But even before that, we need to start thinking and writing our own lists. Life is indeed too short to die with unfulfilled dreams and wishes.

What are on your lists?

Ferrari breaks Force India's Heart

Adrian Sutil was all set to claim 4th place at Monaco in 2008 after a brilliant day which saw him dodging accidents left and right in the rain and exploiting his car when he could --- and then Kimi loss control.

It's not Kimi's fault, really. But it makes you wonder how Kimi's car lost it, when Sutil's went over the same patch of road as his a few secs before without incident.

Sutil was said to be inconsolable.

Idea: Have Sutil and Raikonnen swap cars for the next race at Magny Cours! Then Sutil can have the speed for once -- and maybe ram Kimi's car if he wanted to.

Sigh. I was all set to give Force India a whoop and a cheer, and then this. The next hope for anything like this happening again is in... 2009?

Classic Game Music played by a Classical Orchestra

This is from 2006 but I only discovered it today.

Who knew video game music could be played by an orchestra? Great fun on classic games from Video Games Live.

Lots more on Youtube: you want Zelda? Final Fantasy? Metal Gear? It's all there, fanboys (and fangirls!)

TRAPPED IN AN ELEVATOR FOR 41 HOURS

Nicholas White went down for a cigarette break -- then went back up to his office. Little did he know that this would be the longest elevator ride he would ever take.

Englishman In New York (Live at 19 East) - Bamboo

You might think that it's off to have Bamboo, a Filipino through and through, doing a cover of Sting's "Englishman in New York". And you might even be forgiven for saying that it's just not right for Bamboo to have that almost-affected English accent in some parts.

But damn, if this ain't a one of the best covers of one of Sting's best song's, I don't know what is.

TURN UP YOUR VOLUME LOUD, boys and girls.

Twitter in Plain English

This is a great little video to explain how Twitter works. (You DON'T TWITTER? Go to Twitter.com then after you watch this vid!)

I like it not just because it explains the concept of Twitter really well, but also because of the way it does it.

This comes from CommonCraft.com -- a site dedicated to "explanations in Plain English" through simple drawings. (I wonder why I never saw this before though.)

It's educational in a graphic / visual kind of way --- kind of like Hotforwords without the boobs and seduction.

It's what... HotForNet (?) for net newbies, at least based on the topics of the videos they've done so far: RSS, social networking, blogs, online photosharing, podcasting, etc.

Check out their site!

Yup! Got my first Google Adsense cheque today!

Watch this video to understand how Adsense works. (There are other videos on Adsense out there but I found this really effective in explaining why the system works and why Google does it).

Now, to work on getting my second Adsense cheque....

Obama Gives Hillary The Finger

There's a bit of debate on whether he really did flip the birdie or whether he was just scratching an itch.

Right... With a middle finger?

And assuming that it WAS an itch, isn't this guy media savvy enough to realize that anything he does immediately becomes fodder for the opposition?

"Obama 08" to "Obama Oh No!"

Papaya Dance on Good Morning America

I knew it would make it to the U.S. when the U.S. Ambassador danced it herself on a Philippine morning show -- that was like an endorsement to the U.S. people that it's ok !

Here's the other video:

My First Day At School

This wonderful little animation takes you into the mind of a little kid on the first day of school.

This must be how Mira will feel when she enters THE BIG SCHOOL in a couple of months.

Papaya Dance Invades America

First, we infected the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines...

She danced it on-air for Umagang kay Ganda -- a Philippine morning show.

Then, we infected the hosts of Good Morning America...

Janina San Miguel - Bb. Pilipinas 2008 Q&A (complete)

The girl blew the Q&A big time by not even answering the question --- but she managed to stay composed somehow while blowing it.

The result --- apart from the laughter from the galleries -- she won and will represent the Philippines for Miss World 2008.

Two things:

1. Somebody should tell her not to even try speaking in English anymore. That's why they have interpreters for beauty pageants. It must be some kind of masochistic colonial mentality that forces these girls to think that they should speak in English even when their own daily experience shows them they better not.

2. This thing already had 17,000 plus views on Youtube -- and it was just last night.

This "commercial" for a brand of locks is really sick and gross BUT truly funny.

A Vision of Students Today

Back when I was still teaching, it became rapidly apparent to me that the students I was facing everyday were different from me.

Call it a difference of generations, a difference of cultures, and a difference of upbringing.

My fellow teachers and I would watch each new batch of freshmen walk into the college and we'd cluck cluck to ourselves that the "kids" were so so so different nowadays.

This video, forwarded by April ( a former student of mine) shows why.

I am sure that many of the things that the video shows are part and parcel of her life -- she's never known a world without 24/7 internet and 360 degree connectivity to everybody she knows and to every possible thing that could be had from the common wealth of human knowledge. Well, April -- this video hopefully shows you why many of your teachers seemed lost in trying to connect with you.

They were digital nomads in a classroom of digital natives. They needed time to get used to a new world!

I am your brother, your best friend forever

... but could you, like, keep it down a bit?

Introducing the next William Hung, the guy who in less than seven minutes became instantly more famous than you or me, now recognizable worldwide for his singing than you with your excellent karaoke skills can never be... Renaldo Lapuz!

Somehow, American Idol really has a way of bringing out the strangest people from the nooks and crannies of America. On the one hand, you could consider this shameless (he really is without it, yes?) attempt at notoriety and the corresponding ridicule inherent in the way Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and the producers treated him as sad. Opportunistic of the looneys of America, even.

But when you consider that this guy -- and all the others like him -- dressed up to be noticed , edited, parodied and mocked on TV and Youtube for now until the end of time -- it's not sad anymore. He is getting exactly what he was asking for.

Which is more than what can be said for the rest of us.

I think I just peed in my pants

The new MacBook Air is amazing -- but it's sans DVD, CD drives. And no Firewire either.

However, it's a real beaut --- and I bet the fanboys and fangirls are praising Steve Jobs to the heavens anyway.

At USD 1,800 for the 1.6GHZ version, it's not cheap. you'll still need to shell out for an external DVD/CD drive. But hey you'll be the coolest guy / girl in the coffeshops now.

Or you could, like me, stick to whatever it is you're using at the office, and buy an ASUS eee PC (at a sixth of the price) to impress the strangers at the Starbucks instead.

Yeah, am sourgraping. And, no, I haven't bought an eee just yet, either. : )
